Spring Property Cleanup Checklist for Northwestern Ontario Homeowners

Spring in Northwestern Ontario arrives like a relief — the snow recedes, the ice goes out on the lakes, and suddenly your property is visible again. It’s also when you discover everything the winter left behind. Here’s the complete spring cleanup checklist Eagle Ridge uses to get properties looking their best after a long Kenora winter.

1. Assess for Winter Damage

Before anything else, walk your property and look for damage. Check retaining walls for movement or cracking. Look at pathways and patios for heaving or cracking. Inspect the grading around your foundation — has frost heave shifted anything? Note any trees or shrubs that have been damaged by snow load or ice.

2. Clear Debris and Winter Residue

Winter leaves behind sand, gravel, dead leaves, broken branches, and general debris. Clearing this early in the season prevents it from smothering new grass growth and allows you to see the true condition of your lawn and landscaping.

3. Check Your Drainage

Spring snowmelt is the biggest drainage event of the year. Walk your property during or immediately after a significant melt and observe where water is flowing. Are there areas pooling near your foundation? Is water running toward your driveway or garage? Address drainage issues now, before the summer rain season.

4. Lawn Aeration and First Cut

Northwestern Ontario lawns take a beating over winter. Aeration helps relieve soil compaction and allows water and nutrients to reach grass roots. Wait until the soil has dried out enough to support equipment before aerating — working on saturated soil does more harm than good.

5. Inspect and Repair Hardscaping

Check all hardscaping — retaining walls, patios, pathways, steps — for frost damage. Minor issues addressed in spring are much less expensive to repair than the same issues left to worsen through another season. If you notice significant movement or cracking in a retaining wall, have it assessed by a professional before the ground dries out completely.

6. Prepare Cottage Properties

For Kenora and Lake of the Woods cottage owners, spring opening includes additional tasks: checking the dock and shoreline for ice damage, clearing access roads and driveways of winter debris, and assessing any erosion along the waterfront. Eagle Ridge provides spring cottage opening services for properties across the Kenora area, Sioux Narrows, and the Whiteshell.
